WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY PROGRAM: SEEKING EQUITY IN OUR LOCAL MEDIA
Several local groups have joined to celebrate the 88th Anniversary of the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which granted women the right to vote. A breakfast meeting will take place at the Quincy University Hall of Fame Room in the University's Fitness Center on Saturday, August 23, 9:00 am.
The meeting will feature a panel discussion on the topic "Seeking Equity in Our Local Media." Panel participants will be Carlos Fernandez, General Manager of WGEM; Carol Sowers, News Director of KHQA; and Mike Hilfrink, Executive Editor of the Quincy Herald-Whig.
There will be ample opportunity for comments and questions from those present. The meeting is being cosponsored by the League of Women Voters of Adams County, the American Association of University Women, Quincy University and the YWCA.
Iris Nelson, president of the League of Women Voters, noted that "Women's Equality Day was established by Congress in 1971, not only to celebrate this historic moment, but also to call attention to the continuing efforts toward full equality for women. While American women now comprise more than half of our nation's population, the struggle to become full participants in many aspects of public life has yet to be fully realized. We invite all those who are interested in the topic to join us for this celebration."
Members of the public are invited to attend. A complimentary continental breakfast will be served.
