Poverty rates on the rise

Data just released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows poverty in Adams County is on the rise while it is declining in the state of Illinois.

The poverty rate increased to 11.1 percent in Adams County and the extreme poverty rate (Families of four making less than $10,325) grew from 3.5 percent in 2006 to 5.4 percent in 2007.

The state's poverty rate decreased from 12.3 percent in 2006 to 11.9 percent last year.

With 7,096 considered below the poverty level, another 17.4 percent of Adams County residents (11,143) are at risk of falling into poverty.
