Mayor's campaign war chest passes $50K mark

by Bob Gough, editor, QuincyNews.org

The latest D-2 filings are out and Quincy Mayor John Spring has amassed a campaign war chest of more than $52,000 going into next year's municipal election.

According to the Illinois State Board of Elections, Spring has $9,200 in itemized contributions and $9,187 in non-itemized contributions. He also has $7,450 in funds transferred in from other campaign sources.

Adding the total receipts of $23,137 from the reporting period to the $30,858.82 he had at the beginning of the period and deducting the $900 in expenses and transfers out of and the total amount stands at $52,822.82.

No Republican has yet to emerge as a candidate to challenge Spring for the mayor's post.

He didn't spend $50,000 of his own money, in fact I would assume he didn't spend one penny of his own money to get the job. He is very good at wasting others money for his own personal gain the way I see it. The folks that apparently want jobs or contracts with the city give him money, then it appears he wastes 4 years of tax payers money pushing his own agendas, oh ya, and it does look like those contributors who want the jobs get them. He should have well over a million $$ in his "war chest" for all the apparent personal favors. Looks to me like he doesn't even do a good job at that?

Grow Quincy west....maybe Missouri will annex us and we'll still have a Demoract for Governor but we'd gain a Republican controlled state house, cheaper taxes on businesses, fewer taxes on gasoline and cigarettes, a more business friendly environment, reasonable gun laws and the list goes on and on.

Whoever runs against him needs a platform based on growing the city west not east.

there is a company that runs the waste water treatment plant. I know it goes by some initials, Is Enviromental Management Corp of O'Fallon the same company? If so, this is a company that the city pays to do our work. That is a large contribution $1150

A "chosen" candidate
Reply #8 on : Fri November 07, 2008, 18:30:56
Am I correct that some (many?) candidates are chosen by current party leadership or an incumbent that intends to retire?

Who could afford to take time off work to campaign for a job that you're only guaranteed to have for 4 years? Is our Mayor like many of the federal politicans and draws his salary as his pension until death?
really?

The list of contributors is interesting. Every attorney that works for the city, including Spizzo. How is it that local contractors can contribute to the mayor and still bid on local projects? No conflict?
Come on C. David, put your name in the hat! Please!

Spring needs some good competition and he can be beaten with hard work but it won't be easy with this kind of head start and with the organization he has. If no one fields a better candidate though, there's little room for anyone to complain - too many offices were unopposed in the election this week! I'm hoping that the Republican party fields a solid and marketable candidate.
