FBI to assist in alleged Website hack investigation

by Bob Gough, editor, QuincyNews.org

Quincy Police Chief Rob Copley says the FBI has responded to his department's request for assistance to investigate an alleged hack of a Website hosted on the city's computer server.

"Detective Anjanette Stovall has spoken with an agent from the FBI office in Springfield," Copley said Wednesday morning. "It looks like they are going to be giving us some assistance and will let us know which task force could assist us in this investigation."

Copley had no timetable for when the FBI would take action. He has said a third-party is needed to assist in the investigation because it deals with a city department.

As previously reported by QuincyNews.org, part of the allegedly altered information on the Quincy United Soccer Club's Website involves the changing of city of Quincy IT Director Jim Murphy's e-mail address on the site. Murphy is also the president of the board of the Quincy United Soccer Club.

Murphy sent an e-mail to non-city personnel on September 25 saying the QUSC's Website had been hacked into "several" times since July 16. The e-mail also says "During this process, they have changed some information in order to make the city and myself look bad. We have some information and (are) trying to investigate the individual(s) that may be involved."

The city would not disclose who received that e-mail, citing privacy issues for non-public employees, but most city department heads were not made aware of the alleged hackings.

On October 6, Police Chief Rob Copley said "City of Quincy IT Director Jim Murphy has filed a report with the Quincy Police Department alleging that the Quincy United Soccer Club's website located on the INET server was accessed without authority and information on the site was altered.  This 'intrusion' reportedly occurred on more than one occasion between mid-July and mid-September. Detectives have collected potential evidence in this case."

In late October, the city denied QuincyNews.org's request for a copy of the police report, citing that the disclosure would hamper an ongoing investigation.

Thank God this major crime will get plenty of air time. Isn't it nice to live in a city with such big crimes?? So how much money are we wasting on this one?? Hopefully not as much as the Witch hunt for the firefighters and city employees (That was money WELL spent!!) Don't worry Spring, we will remember it all at election time!!

So lets look at the investigation . Soccer club hacked to change email from the City email to the info@ email , yet when the City IT took the site down to fix the hack they changed the City email to the info @ email .

Odd isn't it

Sure, the taxpayer pays for it in the end. I'm just saying I'm pretty sure the city doesn't write the FBI a check.

No bill from the FBI

whew...I'm relieved it isn't Quincy taxpayers funding the FBI, just the QPD time on this. I guess that makes Federal taxpayers (oh....I'm one of those too!) foot the bill for the FBI efforts & spreads the cost around.

This is almost insane. Someone(I doubt it) hacks a site to change a email address from his email to another of his emails and all the while the members of club have used the email address for years. So they have to know this is bogus. Where is the damage, where is the "make the city and myself look bad" part? Hacker had unbelievable timing to do it same day as info came out that he was using city to host site. By the way have any other non profits stepped forward to use city to host their sites?

I believe Chief Copley said the FBI doesn't send the city a bill for this.

If we taxpayers have to pay for this, there better have been a hack. If there wasn't, which there wasn't, Murhpy should not only be sent packing, but he should have to pay for filing a false police report. I'd like to be in the room when the FBI is briefed on what supposedly happened.

who knows what nefarious deeds were committed by the yet unknown perpetrator(s). The report has resulted in productive use of taxpayer funds.

I can't wait for the next installment.
