From tennessean.com: "How's that hopey, changey stuff workin' out for ya?" Sarah Palin asked 1,000 or so supporters who paid $300 apiece to attend her speech at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center.

"Put your faith in ideas. I caution against allowing this movement to be defined by one leader or operation," Palin told the National Tea Party Convention in Nashville. The small government movement is "a ground-up call to action that's forcing both parties to change the way they're doing business. This is about the people."

All I need to know is that Palin had cheat notes on her hand before the question was answered. This person is about ready to run a country?? A junior high school student would write on her hand the answer. This women is only riding the cash train. I guess because I don't agree with the rest I must be smoking something.

I accept your definition with the right to rebut at a later date. Ya you can pick apart my list and say this one or that one was or was not based solely on religion and you can garner support for your side and I can do as well. I think we can agree to disagree on this one as it is impossible to determine actual death tolls.

About the only way I can see voting for Barack Obama again is if Palin is the other option.

Ain't no way!!

Religious wars
Reply #22 on : Mon February 08, 2010, 14:14:39
You're right Fed up -- my definition was poor.
Religious Wars:
#1 -- Wars fought becuase of religion
#2 -- Wars fought where one party was of a particular religion

I maintain #1 is a religious war. #2 is not. If a Christian were to attack you (an Atheist) -- becuase they want what you have that is NOT a religious war. If they were to attack you because you WERE an Atheist -- that's a religious war.

Let's do a few on your list from the top down
WWII-- Not religious
Mao Zedong -- Not religious
Mongol Conquests -- Not religious
An Shi Rebellion -- Not religious
Fall of the Ming Dynast -- Not religious
Taping Rebeliion -- FINALLY -- a religious one!!
Annihilation of the American Indian -- Not religious
Iosif Stalin -- Not religious
Mideast Slave Trade -- Not religious
Atlantic Slave Trade -- Not religious

So out of the top 10 only 1 was a religious war. Out of 293 million killed 20 million were because of religion. That's 6.8%. I rest my case unless you can find a counter argument.

2-23-07 Former president Bill Clinton, who came to the White House with modest means and left deeply in debt, has collected nearly $40 million in speaking fees over the past six years,

Former President Bill Clinton earned more than $4.7 million last year in speaking fees.(2008)

Former President Bill Clinton has earned $15.4 million from billionaire Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Cos. investment firm since 2003, according to tax documents released by his wife.

We could split hairs all month long and it would serve no purpose other than to hone my research skills.

"Religious Wars" with "Wars fought because of religion"

I do challenge the above definition. They are one and the same. I suppose you think the Gulf wars were fought over principle and terrorisim as well? News flash!!!! Oil was the underlying reason.

Thanks for the research Fed up...but I think you (and others) confuse "Religious Wars" with "Wars fought because of religion". All those who fight wars think their side is "right". Whether it's patriotism, religious cohesion, or mercenaries.
That doesn't mean the war was started because of religion, only that the parties involved were religious.

For example, in your references, the Taiping Rebellion was definitely fought because of religion. However, the Crusades were started in response to being invaded for conquest of land, not religion. It turned into both a religious and political war later. Just because they were sanctioned by the Pope doesn't make them ALL religious wars.

I think you'll probably find that the total # of killed from wars of politics/land far exceeds anything done solely for religious reasons. I don't have a reference for that but it might be worth some research to quantify the results.
